In Loving Memory of Charles Benefield
Charles Benefield, 88, of Holly Pond, Alabama, passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 13, 2025, joining his beloved wife of 71 years, Betty Jean, in eternal rest. Born on September 26, 1936 in Arkansas to Pearl Harris Benefield, Charles lived a life centered around faith, family, and hard work.
A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, Charles was a man of integrity who led by example. He spent his career as a concrete contractor, taking great pride in his work and leaving behind a legacy of craftsmanship and dedication. But his greatest joy in life was his family, and he made sure they always knew how deeply they were loved.
Charles had a strong and unwavering faith, and he never hesitated to share it with those around him. In conversation with a friend, at church, or even in passing with a stranger, he found joy in spreading the message of his beliefs. His faith guided his actions and he lived a life rooted in kindness, generosity, and service.
He had a heart for people, always putting others before himself. Whether it was helping a neighbor, supporting a friend, or making sure his family never went without, Charles embodied selflessness in everything he did. His love for others was evident in the way he treated everyone with respect, patience, and understanding.
Beyond his work and faith, Charles had a passion for the outdoors. He was an avid gardener who loved showing off his plants and took great pride in the beauty he cultivated. He had a thriving vegetable garden and vibrant flowers - his green thumb was undeniable. He also had a love for deep-sea fishing, finding peace and excitement out on the open water. He cherished every opportunity to share his hobbies with family and friends, passing down his knowledge and enthusiasm to those around him.
Charles was a lifelong sports fan with a deep love for Atlanta Braves baseball and Crimson Tide football. While cheering on his favorite teams or watching a game with family, he always had a passionate opinion about the plays and the players. His enthusiasm for sports was infectious, and he enjoyed passing that love down to his children and grandchildren.
Nothing brought Charles more joy than spending time with his grandchildren. He loved taking care of them, spoiling them at every chance, and watching them splash around in the pool during the summer. In the warmer months, you could often catch him taking his grandsons to go get “two burgers, ‘cause they were growing boys”, turning an ordinary afternoon into a cherished memory. His home was always a place of laughter and love, where his grandchildren knew they were adored beyond measure.
He is survived by his children, Karen Perry, Kandace (David) Phares, and Charles Kevin (Suzanne) Benefield; his grandchildren, Nick (Lindsey) Perry, Lauren (Mitch) Todd, Tre Benefield, Sydney Phares, Elle Benefield, Eli Phares, and Henri Benefield; his great-grandchildren, Acelyn, Ryne Parker, Rhett, Avie, Rhys, Nolan, Charlie Grace, and Charlotte Rose; and his brother, Billy Mack Benefield.
Charles was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Jean Benefield; his mother, Pearl Harris Benefield; and his brother, Loy Benefield, Jr. Though his passing leaves a void in the hearts of those who loved him, his legacy of faith, kindness, and devotion to family will live on through all who had the privilege of knowing him.
May his memory be a blessing and an inspiration to all who knew him.
